Cooroy truly is the heart of the hinterland and can be described in one word as relaxed.
Cooroy is located in the northern Sunshine Coast hinterland, about 120 kilometres north of the state capital, Brisbane, and about 22 kilometres inland from the coast at Noosa Heads. Cooroy’s name came from the Cooroy Mountain, which was originally called Coorooey, from the Aboriginal word for possum, kauri.
The area was explored by timber cutters as early as 1863.
By 1892 the Cooroy railway station began operation and in the same year, a post office opened. Cooroy’s main industry developed from timber, having two operating sawmills, right into dairy farming and fruit growing. In 1915, a butter factory opened, which now operates as an Art Gallery.
