Celebrated architect John Mainwaring's design philosophy is as evident today as it was when he first sketched the bones of this home more than two decades ago. It's a philosophy that responds to the site, the vista and the climate-a philosophy that, here, has stood the test of time.
Prestigious Lone Hand Lane, in Noosa's 'Golden Triangle', is just 5 minutes from the bustling market town of Eumundi and approx 15 minutes from Noosa.
The site, an architect's dream, affords every room the coveted northerly aspect, with bucolic views over the expansive still waters of the 3 acre lake and beyond to the focal point, Mount Cooroy.
Rather than trying to dominate the landscape, the house is grounded in the land, sitting comfortably within nature, a part of it, not apart from it. Built in 1995, and renovated in 2009, it feels striking yet unobtrusive, generous yet restrained, mature yet contemporary. Fads and fashions come and go but good design endures.
Inspired by the Zen-like scenery, the design melds colonial, modern and oriental aspects to create a unique structure that maximises space, natural light, winter sun and summer shade.
Running 45 metres along the lakeshore, the house is reminiscent of the long houses of Asian cultures. Centre stage is the open plan kitchen, living, dining and lounge sectionopen but defined spaces, each offering superb individual vistas to the north and each opening out to the deep covered verandah that extends the full length of the house. Polycarbonate panels inserted at intervals in the verandah roof ensure the internal space remains light and bright.
Polished hardwood floors, a profusion of glass and high ceilings all contribute to the subtropical aesthetic, with excellent insulation afforded by the Ricon roof structure. For those cooler nights, you have the option of flicking on the two reverse cycle air conditioners or dimming the lights to create intimacy and settling in by the Swedish designed Jotul built-in wood burner.
The kitchen is strategically positioned at the hub of the space, facing a large servery window that opens to the deck. Everything is to hand here, with Brazilian granite bench tops, custom Italian ribbed aluminium cupboards, Bosch gas cooker, walk-in pantry and filtered water to sink and fridge.
Cascading down from the verandah, layered decks lead to the 14 metre saltwater pool and, just below, jutting out over the lake, a magical wooden jetty that comfortably seats eight. Imagine lazy brunches, over-water dinner parties, sundowners with friends. Alternatively, lay your yoga mat down, practice your photography skills (the lake is teeming with birds, both resident and migratory), gather your thoughts, or clear your mind. With turpentine piles, this structure is here for the long haul.
Either side of the living space, long, enticing hallways lit by footlights at night lure the eye, piquing curiosity, with framed views left and right slowing down the journey of discovery.
Eastwards lies the media room, the guest quarters with built-ins and French doors to the verandah, and a bathroom with shower and classic terracotta floor tiles. At the end of the journey, lies the study with ample shelving and its own little outdoor sitting area. With NBN access already available, this could be your new 'Head Office'.

Westwards lies the children's wing, two generous bedrooms with built-in intercom to the master bedroom above and a large two-way bathroom containing shower and bath.
Upstairs is dedicated to the master bedroom and ensuite, ensuring privacy, with a small deck offering lofty views over the lake. The flue of the downstairs wood fire extends through the ensuite, keeping it toasty warm on winter nights.
For horse lovers, the practical nature of the house combined with the 14 acres of horse-friendly land and 2.5 bay shed and tack room with water is perfect. The previous owners have run horses and bred alpacas.
The 5 metre deep lake has a capacity of 20 million litres and is engineered to handle any overflow. A windmill pumps supplementary water to the lake from a nearby pond which is fed by a creek.
Mature trees punctuate the gardens leading down to the water's edge and along the entire perimeter of the lake. Native daphne, leptospermum, waterhousia, native frangipani, cassia, black bean - every tree and shrub has been carefully selected to offer either visual appeal, flowers or scent. The orchard has exotic fruit trees and three types of mango.
A terrific place to raise children, a glorious hideaway to entertain friends, a work-from-home dream come true, or just your own slice of the planet to commune with nature and contemplate life, the universe and everything.
